Tom Brown was hired Friday night as the new Houston High School boys’ basketball coach, according to Superintendent Dr. Dan Vandiver.
Brown, who previously coached the boys’ basketball team at Meadow Heights, is the program’s fifth coach in six years. He replaces Dustin Kirkman, who resigned Oct. 10 after one year with the Tigers.
HHS athletic director Brent Kell said Brown was one of three candidates interviewed. He said a fourth person was willing to fill the position for one year only and was not interviewed.
“He is a very positive and energetic coach who loves kids,” Kell said. “I believe he will be a great fit for our boys’ program.”
Brown, who inherits a Tigers team that won three games last season, is familiar with struggling programs. Meadow Heights had 11 consecutive losing seasons before Brown took over in 2001. The team, which was 4-18 the year before Brown arrived, went 15-11 that first season and had winning records in eight of nine seasons under Brown.
Brown’s team at Meadow Heights were known to play an uptempo style. They also shot lots of 3-pointers. On Feb. 10, 2006, his team made a national record 36 triples in one game.
“He is going to bring an uptempo style game that the boys will have fun playing and our fans will enjoy watching,” Kell said.
Brown follows Aaron Griffin, Wayne Jessen, Brent Hall and Kirkman on the sidelines for the Tigers. Houston last won a conference title in 1989 and district championship in 1984.
