HHS graduate Britany Check, second row, far left, guided Billings on Tuesday to the district championship.

A pair of Houston High School graduates are excelling as coaches.

Jim Flora recently guided the Pleasant Hope softball team to a runner-up finish in Class 2. Britany Cheek’s volleyball team at Billings won the district championship Tuesday and will compete Saturday in the Class 1 sectionals.

Flora’s team was the only unbeaten softball team in Missouri entering the championship game. Pleasant Hope lost 6-2 to Palmyra.

Cheek’s team topped Exeter in three sets – 26-24, 12-25, 25-18 – for the district title.

“Coach (Britany Cheek) told us not to give up,” Billings junior Emily Smith told the Repubic News. “She believed in us, so we had to, too.”

Cheek, a 2006 HHS graduate who will graduate in December from Missouri State University, is in her second season at Billings. Last year, the team went 13-13-1. They are currently 19-8-1.
