A Springfield postal processing center is not included on a hit list of locations set for closing.

Residents at Elk Creek are rallying to save the community post office that is on the chopping block.

Rick Hill, an organizer, said Elk Creek citizens are striving to keep the office open.

“It serves a large rural area of Texas County and is one of the few remaining,” he said. “We believe this post office is needed in the postal network. It is needed in the practical sense provided but also for the continuance of tradition.”

Open only fours a day, it is run efficiently and at a low cost, Hill said.

A letter of protest and petition are posted at these locations: LaDonna’s Styles, Elk Creek; and bulletin board at Shelter’s Grocery and Café, Bumper to Bumper, Hunter Oil and Cabool Home Center, Cabool.

Offices at Success, Bucyrus, Hartshorn and Huggins also are proposed for closing.
