A home on Hawkeye Road east of Houston was a total loss following a fire at about 2:10 a.m. Monday morning.

Houston Rural Fire Association chief Don Gaston said that the cause of the blaze that destroyed the home belonging to Clinton Jones was unknown, but the residents escaped thanks to a smoke alarm.

Gaston said the occupants had to go to another location to use a phone, and by the time Houston Rural firefighters arrived on the scene, it was too late to save the structure.

“When we got there, it was completely engulfed,” Gaston said. “It didn’t take long to go up.”
