Military veteran

John Ernest Shelton, 87, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, at Mountain View Health Care.

He was born Aug. 26, 1924, in Summersville, son of Joel Granville and Mary Wilma Halbrook Shelton.

At a young age, he worked in the Kansas City and Kansas areas at Quizenberry Feed Mill and as a technician/inspector at King Radio. In 1986, he moved back to Summersville to run the family farm.

When his health permitted, he liked to fish. He also enjoyed working and looking after his cattle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Joel; and a sister, Violet Mounce.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathrene Lampkins of Summersville and Kathleen Cole of Salem; a grandson; a granddaughter; three great-grandsons; a sister, Opal Macios of St. Louis; two stepsons, Larry Lehnen and Gary Lehnen of Kansas City, Kan.; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were Friday, Dec. 16, at Bradford Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Steelman officiating. Burial with military honors were in Summersville City Cemetery under the direction of Bradford Funeral Home.
