Known as “Share Your Christmas,” the annual campaign to help needy children in Texas County at Christmas time continues this week.

The program is headquartered in the basement of the Lions Club Den on North U.S. 63. Children enrolled are assigned case numbers, and people wishing to help are encouraged to “adopt” a specific case or provide general donations.

Two “Angel Trees” documenting enrolled children and their cases are set up in Houston, one at the Walmart Supercenter on South Sam Houston Blvd. and another at Untangled Salon on First Street.

Program director Pat Miller said donations have been down this year, and that there are still many needs.

“We will be working through the 24th,” Miller said, “and we hope to have gifts for all the children who applied. We still need new or good used toys and children’s clothing, or cash to provide for those who weren’t adopted or taken care of on the Angel Tree.”

As of Monday morning, 293 Texas County children from 122 families had been enrolled in the program.

Local organizations, groups or businesses that contributed during the past week include Air Evac employees, Burch Insurance, Quick Cash, Untangled Salon, Houston Lions Club, USDA Service Center employees, The Bank of Houston, Northside Baptist Church, youth from St. Mark’s, St. John’s and St. Vincent’s Catholic churches, Houston Walmart, Ozark Baptist Church, Bado Community church, KFC/Taco Bell and the Route 63 Car Club.

Donations and applications are accepted at the Lions Club Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cash donations – to help children who are not adopted – can be made Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Houston Herald office on Grand Avenue in Houston.
