The Houston Tigers’ best shooting night of the season wasn’t quite enough to beat Alton.
The Tigers scored a season-high point total in their 94-83 road loss Monday.
Curry Van Horn was 11-for-19 en route to a team-best 32 points. Devin Coulter missed just two of his 10 shots as he scored 17.
Weston Walker had nine points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for Houston (1-5).
Although he was pleased with his the offensive production, Tigers coach Tom Brown said his team’s fullcourt defense was ineffective at times.
“We gave up too many shots,” he said. “I know we’ll give them up in a press, but we gave up too many. We still have some work to do there.”
Alton, which improved to 7-2, raced ahead 25-11 after the opening quarter and led by eight at the half.
The Tigers’ strong shooting came one game after they struggled offensively in a loss to Plato.
Houston was just 22-for-84 from the field — 26.2 percent — Friday in a 66-58 loss to the Eagles.
Rodney Preheim led the Tigers, who misfired on 22 of their 25 3-point attempts, with 15 points. Coulter and Aaron Cantrell scored 14 points apiece.
Brown said his goal is 70-80 shots per game. Houston exceeded that expectation, just not with enough success.
“Now we’ve just got to get them to go down,” Brown said. “It’s just a matter of time.”
Casey Cobb led three Plato players in double figures with 20 points.
Trailing 10-8 early, the Tigers got three baskets from Preheim and a Cantrell jumper as part of a quick 8-0 run to go ahead by six points.
Houston led 18-15 after the first quarter before the advantage quickly disappeared. Cobb had an offensive putback and layin to ignite a 9-0 run that put Plato ahead 24-18.
The Eagles led the rest of the way.
Although his team has one victory, Brown said the Tigers are beginning to play his style. They are keeping an uptempo pace while committing 12 turnovers per game. Their defense has forced an average of 22.5 turnovers.
JUNIOR VARSITY: The JV Tigers got their first victory of the season Saturday by defeating Plato 54-22 at the Norwood Tournament.
The previous night, the Tigers lost to Plato 59-47. Devin Garrett hit three 3-pointers and scored 22 points in the defeat.
