The Houston Lady Tigers beat Norwood 48-37 Monday night to avenge an earlier loss and win their opening game at the Mansfield Tournament.

HHS (5-9) advances to Thursday’s semifinals against top-seeded Licking. The Lady Tigers lost to Licking by 13 points on Dec. 10.

Freshman Kylee Elmore hit four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 17 points to pace the Lady Tigers against Norwood. No other HHS player reached double figures.

Lady Tigers coach Brent Kell said he wants his players to get to the free-throw line more frequently. Houston was 8-for-12 against Norwood, which had 19 attempts.

The Lady Tigers’ last seven opponents have had more free-throw attempts and five times HHS has lost when it made more field goals than its opponent.

“I know we’re mostly a perimeter team, but I’d like to see us drive it more to the basket and get to the line,” Kell said.

Houston outscored Norwood 16-8 in the opening quarter and had a 13-point halftime advantage.

Norwood narrowed the gap to four in the fourth quarter before freshman Alissa Bowlin scored consecutive baskets to help HHS pull away.

On Thursday, Alexa Ichord and Bowlin scored 10 points apiece in a 55-37 loss to Mountain Grove to conclude the Mountain Grove Tournament.

The previous Tuesday, Houston outscored Dora 8-3 in overtime for a 41-36 victory.

Elmore led the way with four triples and 16 points. Senior Elizabeth Hayes added 12 points.

JUNIOR VARSITY: Sierra Weaver scored 16 points in the JV Lady Tigers’ 30-28 victory Thursday against Mountain Grove.

Maddie Vandiver added six points for Houston, which finished 1-2 in the Mountain Grove Tournament.

Last Tuesday, Weaver scored 12 points in a 28-24 loss to Mountain View. Nora Dixon added five points.
