Galen Hickerson

Galen Joel Hickerson, 64, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at Christian Health Care & Rehabilitation North in Lebanon following a two-year battle with melanoma.

He was born Sept. 29, 1947, in Great Bent, Kan., son of Albert and Virginia Leedy Hickerson. He and Evelyn Douglas were married Oct. 11, 1968, at Oak Hill Christian Church.

The oldest of three children, he grew up in Dodge City, Kan. In 1965, he enrolled at Ozark Bible College, where he received his bachelors of sacred literature degree.

He became an ordained minister and preached at a variety of mostly smaller rural churches. Over the course of 35 years, he served churches in Arkansas, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. He pursued graduate studies in ministry, specializing in ministry to senior citizens.

He enjoyed singing, lending his bass voice to parts singing in college and church. He was a long-time member of the Fellowship of Christian Magicians and enjoyed using illusions and balloon sculpting to share gospel messages with kids of all ages. He was a fan of the St Louis Cardinals and enjoyed attending Springfield Cardinals games with church groups.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors his wife, Evelyn of Houston; a son, Allen, of Pawnee, Ill.; a daughter, Carolyn Davis of Tulsa, Okla.; two sisters, Gwenna Harms of Great Bend, Kan., and Gina German of Mayfield, Kan.; three nieces; one nephew; and two grandsons.

Services were Saturday, Feb. 25, at Evans Funeral Home Chapel with Allen Hickerson officiating. Burial was in German Cemetery.
