Hazel Postlewait

Hazel Ireta Carter Postelwait, 89, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at Houston House.

She was born May 15, 1922, in Upton, daughter of Oscar and Leah Snyder Carter. She and Wayne Postlewait were married Aug. 20, 1942.

She grew up in the Upton community and attended the Coffee School at an early age.

She worked at Quarter Master Laundry in Ft. Leonard Wood until her retirement in 1979.

She accepted Christ as her Savior at age 16. She loved telling the story to her children of breaking the ice in the water during her baptism. As a child, she enjoyed walking with her friends to Hickory Ridge Baptist Church and during her later years attending services with her grandson as pastor.

She loved her grandbabies, gardening, quilting and watching her children play baseball. She enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals on television and listening to them on the radio at the same time.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five brothers, Wesley Carter, Harvey Carter, Wiliford Carter, Marshall Carter and Kenneth Carter; a sister, Velma Lorene Carter Tollefson; a daughter, Lois Mings; an infant daughter; an infant son; and two great-grandchildren.

Survivors include six sons, Virgil, Jerry, Larry, Robert and Leslie of Bucyrus and Stanley “Ed” of Chesapeake, Va.; three daughters, Joyce Schaffer of Osage Beach, Shirley Weber of Lynchburg and Donna Petty of Plato; 26 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Ramsey of Bucyrus; and a brother, Vernon Carter of Houston.

Services were Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Hickory Ridge Baptist Church with Pastor Albert Weber officiating. Burial was in Union Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
