A trial date for a Cabool businessman accused of murdering his wife has been delayed while he is under an evaluation in the Missouri Department of Corrections, officials said.
Daniel W. Chapman, 55, is accused of gunning down his wife in their Cabool convenience store in August. A hearing to set a trial date was delayed last week while Chapman is evaluated. Chapman is now set to appear Feb. 23.
According to a witness, the Chapmans were inside the gas station on U.S. Business 60, when a gentleman pulled up to the door. He told authorities he took two steps toward the business before he was waved off by Dan Chapman. The witness said wife Sandy Chapman ran toward the front door, and he saw Dan Chapman fire a shot at her with a black semi-automatic pistol.
The witness said he heard at least four more shots fired as he ran for safety at a nearby car wash.
After about five minutes, the witness told police he saw Dan Chapman leave the parking lot in a truck. It was the last eyewitness account of Chapman’s whereabouts before his capture in Colorado.
Chapman, who is represented by John H. Kizer of Springfield, remains in the Texas County Jail.
