Houston senior Rodney Preheim is pictured making a tackle during the 2011 season. He has accepted an invitation to play in the football portion of the Down Under Sports Tournaments.

A Houston High School football player will participate in an Australian all-star game this summer — if he receives enough community support to send him there.

Rodney Preheim has accepted an invitation to play in the football portion of the Down Under Sports Tournaments. He received the offer after earning all-conference honors as a member of the Houston High School football team.

Prehiem, a starting linebacker and offensive lineman, did his part with his play on the field. Now he needs financial assistance to pay for his trip.

It will take $5,200 to pay for the 11-day venture that will include a visit to Hawaii before traveling to Australia.

Prehiem said the trip, which also allows for sight-seeing around the country, would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It would also provide him valuable playing time against skilled players.

“It would prove a kid from a small town could go to a big event and have the support of the community,” Prehiem said.

Preheim’s family is hosting a BBQ and bake sale March 10 at Town & Country in Houston. But they will also need sponsorships to pay for his trip. Anyone willing to help should contact Preheim at 417-260-3123 for a sponsorship form. More information is also available at www.downundersports.com.
