Sales tax revenue collected by Houston merchants dropped by about 13 percent in the first monthly distribution of the year.
The total from a one-cent sales tax was $51,067, which was down about 13 percent – or $7,881 from a year ago – from the previous period a year ago. The amount was nearly identical to 2010’s figure.
Retailers also collect two quarter-cent sales taxes for streets, sidewalks and other capital improvements, such as utilities. Each contributed $12,215, which was down $1,806 on each from a year ago.
An eighth-cent sales tax is earmarked for debt repayment on a fire truck. It netted $6,107.
