Rick Santorum

Rick Santorum was the big winner in a presidential primary Tuesday in Texas County.

The former Pennsylvania senator picked up 817 Republican votes at polling precincts, easily defeating former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who received 266 votes. Congressman Ron Paul polled third with 237 votes.

Only about 11 percent bothered to vote. In all, 1,687 traveled to polls.

The Republican primary was only a beauty contest that won’t affect the selection of delegates. Instead, Republicans will gather next month to select delegates at caucuses.

President Barack Obama easily won the Democratic primary with 196 of the 257 votes cast.
