A five-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon north of Houston resulted in multiple injuries and two deaths. The information below describes what unfolded at the scene, according to authorities.

Vehicle 1 is a car traveling northbound that had slowed on U.S. 63 to turn left onto Northview Lane. It came to rest in a ditch next to Keenview Road.

Vehicle 2 is a truck that stopped behind Vehicle 1. As a result of the accident, it was flipped onto its side and faced southbound in the middle of U.S. 63.

Vehicle 3 is the second vehicle to stop behind Vehicle 1. The passenger was killed. Another passenger in the back, who authorities say was ejected from the car, was flown by a chopper from the scene and later died at a Springfield hospital. A third person was extricated from the car by the Texas County Rescue Squad.

Vehicle 4 is a tractor trailer also traveling northbound on the highway. The driver, authorities said, glanced down and when he returned his eyes to the highway, saw the vehicles stopped in front of him. He plowed into the back of Vehicle 3, causing a chain reaction. The tractor trailer traveled down a ditch and came to rest on its wheels alongside a fence row just off the highway.

Vehicle 5 was traveling southbound toward Houston when the accident happened. It was spun around and faced northeast as it came to rest in a ditch in front of the Church of Christ Temple Lot.
