The Missouri State High School Activities Association will release football district assignments and basketball classifications on Saturday, March 31, the organization has announced.
The football assignments will be for the 2012 and ’13 seasons. Basketball classifications will be for both boys’ and girls’ teams. The announcements will be made on the MSHSAA website at www.mshsaa.org.
Historically, district assignments for football have been released following the January board of directors meeting. With the change in the football playoff format beginning in 2012 combined with a few situations affecting the possible enrollment figures of some member schools, MSHSAA said a delay in making this announcement was passed by the board.
At its March 8 meeting, the MSHSAA board of directors took action to approve a new system for classifying basketball schools. Classifications will be based upon member schools currently registered for the basketball state-series with the addition of one new member joining the association for the 2012-’13 school year.
“Standard Enrollment Breaks” were used to classify basketball teams in the past, which included all member schools regardless if the school fielded a basketball team or not. The new system will include basketball playing schools only, using the gender that has the highest number of participating schools. Currently, boys’ basketball would be used to set the classification breaks.
The breakdown of the classifications will be as follows, according to MSHSAA:
–Class 1 – 128 (plus any ties in enrollments working up).
–Class 2 – 128 (plus any ties in enrollments working up).
–Class 3 – 128 (plus any ties in enrollments working up).
-Class 4 – 96 (plus any ties in enrollments working up).
-Class 5 – All remaining basketball playing schools.
The board of directors will approve the district assignments and classifications at its March 30 and 31 meeting.
