A 1979 Houston High School graduate earned his third state championship –– and second in a row –– by leading the Scott City (Kan.) Beavers to the Class 3A title.

Under the direction of Glenn O’Neil, Scott City beat Nemaha Valley 61-47 for the program’s second straight state championship.

Scott City finished the near-perfect season with a 25-1 record.

It was also the second straight title for O’Neil. He also guided the team to the state title in 2006.

Scott City, which has a roster of 10 underclassmen on the team, raced ahead 29-7 in the championship game.

“It’s about as good a start as I’ve seen any team, not just my teams, have to a game,” said O’Neil. “I thought they were a little nervous in the warmups and we came out with a little more confidence. We wanted to jump on them early and we were able to keep them from any long runs.”
