The Houston tennis team lost Tuesday’s season opener 9-0 at Salem.

The first match of the season was postponed due to rain.

Despite being shut out, HHS tennis coach John Jordan said he was optimistic his young team will eventually develop into a strong one.

“We have a lot of new kids this year who have never played on the varsity and junior varsity level,” Jordan said. “I’m excited because they are young and enjoy playing. The kids have made tremendous improvement from where we started. I think the next few years really look bright for us.”

Houston’s closest match was Randy Barker’s 8-3 loss in No. 2 singles. Austin Bathon was defeated 8-2, freshman Olivia Woosley lost 8-1 and Chris Moore, Lizzy Swindell and Ely Todd were each defeated 8-0.

HHS also dropped all three doubles matches.

In JV play, Madison Bronebrake won her No. 2 singles match 7-6 (2) for Houston’s lone win.

Patience Clinton lost her No. 1 singles match 7-5. Alexis Adey was defeated 6-1 and Haley Kelley, Aaron Stilley and Kayla Shriver each lost 6-0.

All three JV doubles teams lost 6-0.
