An apparent lightning strike caused a fire that destroyed a residence Friday morning just east of Houston.
Dewayne Goforth, who lives at 6950 E. Highway 17 – directly across from The Animal Shelter of Texas County – said he believes his home was struck by lightning around 4 a.m. He said he inspected the residence and did not see or smell any signs of danger.
Goforth said he left his home around 5 a.m. to eat breakfast at Texas County Memorial Hospital. About 30 minutes later, he said someone called the cafeteria and alerted him there was a fire on his property. It was his home.
The Houston Rural Fire Department was dispatched at 6 a.m. Intercounty Electric Cooperative also was called to the scene.
Shortly after 8 a.m., the fire was contained but continued to burn. The home was a total loss. Goforth said the clothes he wore to breakfast were the only possessions he salvaged.
