A new pharmacy program offering a drug discount for Texas County Memorial Hospital outpatients should begin in April, board members heard at their monthly meeting.
“The first pharmacy has been approved,” said Wes Murray, chief executive officer at TCMH, of the 340B contract pharmacy program.
The first pharmacy to be approved, Hutcheson Pharmacy in Houston, is waiting on a wholesale account to be set up in order to begin filling prescriptions through the 340B program.
Local pharmacies can contract through the program to provide pharmaceuticals to patients of TCMH clinics or patients at the TCMH emergency department, excluding patients with Medicaid.
Murray reported that patients have been asking about the program since information about the program became available.
“We have been utilizing the 340B pricing structure internally for some time,” Murray said. “It saved TCMH $122,000 in 2011.”
Murray explained that in January and February 2011, the 340B program provided $9,000 in savings.
“Already in the first two months of 2012, we have saved $23,000,” he said. “We are learning more about the products available in the program and learning how to use them.”
TCMH is currently in contact with other county pharmacies that are planning to contract through the 340B program.
