Baccalaureate services are this evening at Houston High School.

A 1975 Houston High School graduate who has enjoyed a successful career in the cell phone industry is the 2012 baccalaureate speaker.

Joe Slayton of Pocahontas, Ark., will be the featured guest at the May 6 event for HHS seniors, their families and the community. The service begins at 6 p.m. inside Hiett Gymnasium.

Slayton rose through the ranks of Alltel following his hiring in 1980 and eventually became president of Alltel Wireless in 2007. He retired in 2009 when Verizon purchased the company.

In 2011, Slayton launched Slayton Wireless with 15 retail stores in Illinois and Ohio. The company expanded to 19 stores this past year.

Baccalaureate is sponsored annually by the Houston Ministerial Alliance.
