Betty Jean (Frederick) Dunn, 84, passed away April 12, 2012, at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston, Mo.
Betty was born April 27, 1927, in Houston, Mo., and spent most of her life there raising her family and running a successful business. She opened Betty’s Beauty Salon on Grand Avenue near Evan’s Funeral Home in 1955. In 1961, she built a new, larger salon on Chestnut Street. She has been a member of hair styling organizations and competed in contests throughout the years, including Texas County Cosmetologists Association and the Missouri State Hair Fashion Committee.
Betty’s greatest joy was her children and grandchildren. She volunteered as a leader in Scouting and 4-H. She was one of the creators of the Children’s Choir at the First United Methodist Church in the 60s and 70s. Betty loved family gatherings and spending time with each family member individually. She also loved gardening and bird watching. She fed many varieties of native Missouri birds from her feeders and could identify each of their calls.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Carrie Frederick; and an infant son, William.
She is survived by her three children, Robyn Harlan and husband, Bob, of Yuba City, Calif., Tom Dunn and wife, DeeDee, of Houston, Mo., and Melissa Dunn of Houston, Mo. She has three grandchildren, Scott Harlan of Irvine, Calif., and Kevin and Caroline Dunn of Houston, Mo.
Services were 11 a.m. Monday, April 16, 2012, at Houston United Methodist Church with the Rev. Beth Duckworth officiating. Pallbearers were Kevin Dunn, Scott Harlin, Clay Ashworth, Colton Huff, Aaron Burch and Randy Barker. Burial was in Pine Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
The family respectfully requests that donations be made to Texas County Library, in her honor, in lieu of floral arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.evansfh.com.
