Houston United Methodist Church will hold a summer Vacation Bible School program.

Houston’s United Methodist Church is planning a new type of Vacation Bible School this summer: Every Wednesday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. the church will hold VBS for children, and free classes and social time for the parents.

The nursery will be open for infants of the families who attend, and options will be available for older children as well. The 10-week program runs from June 6 to Aug. 8, with a break week during the July 4th holiday and a potluck barbecue on the last night with an awards ceremony rather than the usual programs.

Each evening begins with a light supper for all family members, followed by a short opening assembly in which all will attend. The family will then separate and go to their own programs and will meet again at the closing assembly. The church van will pick up families living too far away to walk.

The Vacation Bible School is named “Operation Overboard” and has a water story themed curriculum. The children will be learning about Noah’s Ark, Moses parting the Red Sea, Jonah and the Whale, Jesus Walks on Water and four other stories that involve water. The children will rotate between Bible story, crafts and games. There will be four age groups (K-1, 2-3, 4-5) with preschool age children staying in one room. The children can accumulate points for prizes.

The parents will have five areas to choose from: a financial management class based on the book, “Rich Dad/Poor Dad,” James Dobson’s “Family Talk,” an “It’s In the Book” Bible study, an adult craft class that will include a knitting/crocheting segment on June 11 and 18 or they can choose to relax and have social time.

On Aug. 8, the church will hold a potluck barbecue for the families and children who have attended the program, and all church members also are invited to attend. An assembly in the sanctuary is planned. Awards will be given out to the families and children who have had the best attendance. Recognition will be given to the VBS and adult leaders. There will be games for the children, and other activities to celebrate the successful completion of the program.

Parents and children can register by going by or calling the church office at 417-967-2372 (8:30 – noon, Monday-Friday) or they can register online at Overboard.cokesburyvbs.com/HUMC.
