The Texas County Library system introduced Thursday the ability to download electronic books and audio books on various electronic devices.

Texas County Library entered the digital age Thursday with the addition of eBooks and audiobooks to its offerings.

Library cardholders can check out and download digital media anytime, anywhere by visiting: http://texascountylibrary.lib.mo.us/

Click on “search catalog” in the blue tab. The page then shows an eBooks and eAudiobooks area.

Users may browse the website, check out with a valid library card and download to PC, Mac and many mobile devices. Users — for a few types of media — will need to install free software for audiobooks: OverDrive Media Console. (Available on the website under digital software on the right rail).

To read eBooks, users will need Adobe Digital Editions. Titles can be enjoyed immediately or transferred to a variety of desktop, laptop and mobile devices, including iPad, iPod, Sony Reader, Kindle and many others. Some audio titles can also be burned to CD to listen on-the-go. Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period. There are no late fees.

Texas County Library joins about 50 in the state that offers the service, said Audrey Barnhart, library director.

Barnhart said another new offering also recently launched: Patrons can now place holds from a computer for any item in the library’s electronic catalog. Patrons can select the county branch they intend to pick it up from.
