Dr. Steven Root of Texas County Veterinary Clinic and members of the Texas County Rescue Squad work to free a horse Saturday from a trailer following a wreck east of Houston. Another horse is standing, waiting to be removed.

Emergency personnel rescued two horses after an accident Saturday afternoon east of Houston on Highway 17, authorities said.

A trailer, which contained two horses, landed on its side with animals inside. The truck came to rest in trees on the west side of the highway near a private drive south of The Animal Shelter of Texas County.

Both horses were eventually removed from the trailer with the assistance of Dr. Steven Root of Texas County Veterinary Clinic. Their conditions weren’t immediately available.

According to onlookers, those in the truck moved to this area from Texas. The small children involved did not have any apparent injuries.

The two horses were taken away from the scene in separate trailers. One horse was tranquilized, and rescue squad personnel assisted in placing it in a trailer at the crash scene and then removing it at the vet clinic.

Vet clinic personnel said Monday that the horses were fine, and their owner had been told it was OK to pick them up.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol, Houston Rural Fire Department, Texas County Rescue Squad and Texas County Memorial Hospital responded.
