Houston Schools

The Houston board of education will begin meeting on Tuesdays moving forward, according to Superintendent Scott Dill.

Dill said there are no regulations requiring a school board to meet on a certain day. He said Tuesdays allow administrators an extra day of preparation and remove one responsibility from Mondays, which he said are the busiest of the week.

At last week’s meeting, members:

––Accepted the resignation of Julie Cantrell as paraprofessional.

––Approved hiring Emily Peterson (high school science, biology and A&P), L. Annette Stopka (bus driver), Katie Ozier (paraprofessional), Raylene Wilson (Title I paraprofessional) and Robert Coffey (assistant football coach).

––Approved April McKinney and Tracy McCart as substitute teachers for the upcoming school year.

––Heard a presentation from Jeremie Akins, new middle school principal, regarding his building’s handbook. It and the high school handbook were approved.

––Created a custodial and shuttle driver position. The district will being accepting applications on the position as soon as is practicable.

––Approved a list of directors and coordinators for the 2012-’13 school year.

––Along with Dill, discussed the grade weight of End of Course (EOC) exams at the local level. The issue was tabled until the August meeting.

––Adopted the Board Member Conflict of Interest and Financial Disclosure Policy.

––Approved an auction of surplus property. Details will be made public as soon as possible, Dill said.

––Adopted a resolution authorizing the establishment of an escrow account to defease $180,000 from the series 2005 bonds currently held by the district.

All seven board members were present.

The next regular school board meeting is 6:05 p.m. Aug. 14 at the exceptional child cooperative. There will be a public meeting to set the tax rate at 6 p.m. that day at the cooperative.
