Military veteran

John W. Farley, Commander, US Navy Ret. was born on June 10, 1921, in Houston, Missouri, and passed away peacefully at his residence in Liberty Hill, Texas, surrounded by his loving family on April 4, 2012.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a former resident of Bandera, Texas. for over 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marie M. Farley.

John is survived by his daughters, Sheryl Farley and husband, Bob Carwell, of Liberty Hill, Texas, and Celeste Donovan and husband, Martin, of Lincoln, Rhode Island; a sister, Nadine Biddison of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Celeste and John Donovan, Christine and Tyler Carwell.

His parents were John Martin Farley and Effie Belle Smith of Houston and his grandparents were Jacob Farley and Mary Jane Hightower, also of Houston.

John moved from Houston to join the Navy during WWII, but always returned to visit his brother, Leland Farley (deceased), and many of his old friends. He came back for his 60th high school reunion held in Houston in 1999. John played on the Houston High School basketball team that won the state championship in 1938. He was awarded the Navy Cross for heroism while deployed in the Pacific in 1945.

Those who knew John will remember his great sense of humor, honesty and warm heart.

A graveside service with military honors was held April 9, 2012, in San Antonio, Texas.
