The Houston JV football team outlasted Thayer 18-16 Monday night for the program’s first victory since the 2007 season.
Malachi Sawyer and Ethan Kelley had rushing touchdowns for the Tigers (1-0). Austin Keeney had a 35-yard touchdown reception from Ty Wilkins.
Sawyer had a three-yard score to make it 6-0. Wilkins hit Scott Logan streaking down the middle of the field for a 69-yard gain that set up Kelley’s 11-yard score to make it 12-0 at the half.
Defensively, Keeney recovered a fumble and freshman Nathan Poynter had an interception.
The team’s last victory was in 2007 against Willow Springs under coach Boulder McKinney.
