The Houston City Council authorized work on a well at Cleveland Road and U.S. 63 during a meeting on Monday. 

The Houston City Council on Monday approved a $92,000 outlay to improve its south water well off Cleveland Road.

The well, which is situated near U.S. 63, is targeted for a rebuilding of the pump and lowering it. Half of the cost will be paid in 2012 and the rest in the next budget year, said City Administrator Larry Sutton.

Layne, a longtime vendor for the city, will perform the work in November and December, lower water consumption months.

In other matters, members:

—Approved financial assistance requests from Downtown Houston merchants who organize a Halloween event ($100), Miss Texas County Scholarship Pageant ($35), Houston High School Pineymo yearbook ($35); and Community Betterment and Arts Council of Houston to send youth to an annual conference ($1,500).

A line item will be created next year in the 2013 city budget to handle such requests.

—Okayed a $10,010 bid for electrical stock items; some will be used at the new industrial park in northeast Houston.

—Heard that work on the ’13 budget will continue next week.

—Learned a lighting project on South U.S. 63 is completed. New poles and lights were installed.

—Heard that as time and weather allows, the city’s public grounds committee will chip seal selected lower-usage streets.
