George Roland Young, 83, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield.

He was born Feb. 16, 1929, in Summersville, son of George W. and Easter Odom Young. He and Betty Lou Brewer were married Aug. 8, 1959.

He served in Korea with the Army from 1951 to 1953.

He became a member of the Sycamore Masonic Lodge Number 134 A.F. & A.M. in Sycamore, Ill., in 1983. He was a member of the Scottish Rite.

When he retired in 1993, he and his wife moved to Summersville. He enjoyed going to the Summersville Senior Center as long as his health permitted.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Edward Elzie and Othel Leland Young.

Survivors include his wife, Betty of the home in Summersville; a son, Travis of Springfield; four brothers, Lawrence Young of Summersville, Wayne Young of Summersville, Ollie Dean Young of Antioch, Calif., and Hershel Cordell Young of West Point, Calif.; a sister, Marjorie Neagle of Summersville; a step-grandson; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services were Monday, Oct. 8 at Bradford Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Hamm officiating. Burial with full military honors was in Summersville Cemetery.
