The Houston Middle School girls’ basketball teams opened the season Tuesday with a pair of victories against Ava.

Abby Casper scored 15 points in the eighth-grade girls’ 42-10 win to open the Mountain Grove tournament. Alyssa Hayes, Jaycee Huff and Jaydin Ramsey scored seven points apiece.

“Our ability to create turnovers really gave us some easy scoring opportunities,” said coach John Jordan. “The girls played hard. I was a little disappointed in the way we handled their pressure.”

Houston (1-0) led 13-0 after the opening quarter and 25-4 at the half.

Katilyn Root scored a team-high seven points for the seventh-grade girls, who won 15-12 despite playing with just five players. Amber Johnson added four points.

The Lady Tigers (1-0) led 4-0 at the half.
