Houston seventh-grader Amber Johnson puts up a shot in traffic Monday night against Richards Middle School.

The Houston Middle School girls’ basketball teams swept Richards Middle School of West Plains on Monday.

The seventh grade scored 16 unanswered points in the first half and cruised to a 26-13 victory. The eighth grade was victorious 24-17.

Kaitlyn Root scored 10 points and Carly Crawford had eight for the seventh grade, which led 26-4 entering the fourth quarter.

“Our man defense was pretty good tonight. We helped very well,” Lady Tigers coach John Jordan said. “We played solidly for three quarters, then made silly mistakes in the fourth quarter. These kids are young, and we will get better.”

Jaydin Ramsey scored 11 points for the eighth grade, which used an 8-3 edge in the second quarter en route to a 12-5 halftime lead. Abby Casper added four points. Stephanie Crewse and Emily Shea scored three points each.

“We got in a little foul trouble early, so we had to switch our defense,” Jordan said. “I felt our 2-3 zone was really effective tonight. The girls moved well out of it and helped one another.”
