The Houston eighth-grade girls’ basketball team won the Liberty Tournament championship last Thursday with its ninth consecutive victory.
Alyssa Hayes scored 12 points and Jaycee Huff added eight as the Lady Tigers beat Ava 30-9 to secure the title.
Houston (11-3) held Ava to two or less points in three of the four quarters. The Lady Tigers led 18-6 at the half.
“Great effort by our kids,” Houston coach John Jordan said. “Our pressure really caused Ava problems, and I felt like we really passed the ball well.”
SEVENTH GRADE: Katie Williams scored 13 points and Carly Crawford had nine as the Lady Tigers best Ava 27-8 last Thursday at the Liberty Tournament.
The victory secured second place for the team.
“Probably the best game we’ve played this year,” Jordan said. “The girls rebounded the ball offensively very well, and we were able to easily handle their pressure.”
Houston (8-6) outscored Ava 12-0 in the second quarter to break a 2-2 tie. The Lady Tigers had a 10-1 edge in the third.
