A panel is developing a long-range plan for needs in Houston.

A former Houston mayor will lead an effort to develop a long-range plan for the community.

Steve Hutcheson will chair a committee to study Houston’s future. The first meeting is Thursday at Houston City Hall.

The panel is expected to study matters related to Houston’s future, including annexation, development of additional retail establishments, manufacturing and housing. In the past, the city has opted to hire an outside firm, but decided to do it in-house, said City Administrator Larry Sutton, who noted he has been working on the plan for more than five years.

Members are: Mayor Don Tottingham, council members Chalky Wells and Sharon Sillyman, Hutcheson, Angie Gettys, Rita Ruckert, Carl Honeycutt, Charlie Shea, Joe Stockard, Willie Johnson and Sutton.
