The American Red Cross is hosting a pair of shelter operation and simulation courses this month in Texas County.

The first is 2:30-6:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at 212 Highway 32 in Licking. The second is 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Texas County Health Department on North U.S. 63.

The courses are open to all Red Cross volunteers and trains volunteers to respond in sheltering. After a disaster, when homes have been destroyed, sheltering volunteers are there to welcome those who need a place to stay and give them a place to sleep. Often, shelters are where families will go first after a tornado, hurricane, earthquake or other disaster. This program provides a unique experience of helping a family from the very beginning.

To register for training, email Elise Ayers at elise.ayers@redcross.org. To become a Red Cross volunteer, call the West Plains office at 417-257-0018.
