Gov. Jay Nixon will officially kick off the opening of 2013 trout season in Missouri at Montauk State Park east of Licking before traveling later that day to Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon to also fly-fish there.

At a brief ceremony on the park bridge at Montauk, the governor will fire the starter’s pistol signaling the opening of trout season at 6:30 a.m. He then will be available to speak with the media, before donning his waders and fly-fishing in the Current River, which runs through the park.

In addition to Bennett Spring and Montauk state parks, anglers can also fish for trout at Roaring River State Park, near Cassville, and at Maramec Spring Park, located near St. James. Maramec Spring is owned by the James Foundation.

“One of the pleasures of living in Missouri is trying to land a trout on opening day,” Gov. Nixon said. “I’m delighted to be at two of our trout parks on Friday to join in one of the generations-old traditions that make Missouri State Parks such great places to visit.”
