A bulldozer operator clears land Saturday north of the Houston Memorial Airport in an earlier phase of work. A new beacon also was installed.

The City of Houston has opened bids for the construction of 10 hangars at the Houston Memorial Airport.

Eight firms submitted bids for the project on the northeast perimeter of the airport. It also includes a concrete apron and dirt work, too. Pads for additional hangars also will result.

Huey Construction of Fulton has the apparent low bid of $759,782. The second lowest bidder is Gentry Construction of Houston. The bids will be reviewed. The high bid was $1.14 million.

Under the program, the city accumulates funds that can be used for improvement projects. Until this year, the Federal Aviation Administration paid 95 percent of the cost of the project. This year, it is 90 percent.

The discussion came Monday during a meeting of the Houston City Council.

In other matters, members:

—Heard from Tax Collector Diana Hill, who gave a report on revenue. She will continue to work on delinquent collections.

—Approved plans to make Acorn Lane off Oak Hill Drive a through street — should it be needed. Previously, a cul-de-sac had been discussed.

—Learned the city will seek engineering services under a “Safe Routes to School” grant that will result in additional sidewalk work near the Houston School District campus.

—Heard Texas County Memorial Hospital will pay a required federal audit for a Community Development Block Grant that the city received for construction work on the institution’s campus.

—Will review equipment offered at a MoDOT auction for possible purchase.

—Decided to make its $4,000 contribution toward the chamber’s fireworks show early so that it can take advantage of a discount.
