Military veteran

Mr. John Gregory “Johnny” McGrew Sr., 66, of Yulee, Fla., devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, passed away on Tuesday morning, May 14, 2013, at his home.

Born in Raymondville, Mo., he was the eldest of three children born to the late John Thomas and Aggie Louise Gregory McGrew. Grandson of Tilford “Stonewall” and Laura Gregory.

As a young child, his family lived in Raymondville, where he attended school. Upon reaching high school age he attended Houston High School in Houston, Mo., where he was a member of the graduating Class of 1965. After graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and was stationed at NAS Jacksonville. While off base in the fall of 1965, he met his future wife, Dorothy Theresa Korey, whom he would marry in March of 1966. In December of 1966, their first child, Angela, was born.

As the Vietnam Conflict escalated, Mr. McGrew shipped out and served aboard the USS Intrepid and USS Saratoga. Upon his return home, he remained on active duty until being honorably discharged in October of 1969. The first of two sons, Greg, was born in early 1969. Shortly after being discharged, he was offered employment with Seaboard Coast Line, where he worked through the various ownership and position changes, until retiring as a Customer Service Manager, from CSX Transportation in 2006. While employed with Seaboard Coastline, he was President of the Local Clerks Union and served on the Board of Directors of the Seaboard Coastline Credit Union. During the family’s years living in West Jacksonville, a second son, Bobby, came along in 1978.

His family had been longtime devout Catholics, attending Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Jacksonville. After moving to Yulee in 2007, he and his wife became affiliated with St. Michaels Catholic Church, where he was a 4th Degree Knight, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council # 14295 and a member of St. Michaels Men’s Club. He was a Volunteer with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Auxiliary and a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. McGrew leaves behind his wife of 47 years, Dorothy Korey “Dottie” McGrew of Yulee, Fla.; their daughter, Angela Louise McGrew Martyn (Billy) of Yulee, Fla.; their two sons, John Gregory “Greg” McGrew, Jr. (Carrie) of Jacksonville, Fla., and Robert Thomas “Bobby” McGrew of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Robert Leo McGrew, of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; a sister, Louise “Ky” Sciotto of Houston, Mo.; six grandchildren, Savannah, Alexandra, Peyton, Christian, Alexa, Hannah; a great-grandson, Shane; and several nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial was 10 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2013, at St. Michael Catholic Church with Father O’Shea, Celebrant. Mr. McGrew was laid to rest in Jacksonville National Cemetery with military honors. The Vigil for the Deceased was 4 p.m. Sunday at Oxley Heard funeral Home with Deacon Art Treadwell, officiating.
