The Houston board of education held a special meeting to approve a budget and hire personnel.

The Houston school board met in special session last Tuesday night to approve the budget for the 2013-’14 school year.

As part of the budget, district employees will receive steps for years served and education that will be rewarded monetarily.

Also at the meeting, board members:

––Moved Daniel Narancich to head middle school boys’ basketball coach. He was previously the assistant boys’ basketball coach.

Narancich was replaced by John Coussons, who was approved with a 5-2 vote. Board members Sharon Horbyk and Curtis Hubbs dissented. Coussons was also hired as a new high school social studies teacher with a 6-1 vote. Horbyk dissented.

––Approved hiring Amber Lockhart (high school English) and Lisa Mueller (diagnostician at Exceptional Child Cooperative) for the upcoming school year. Both received 7-0 votes.

––Approved student handbooks for all three buildings.
