A co-ed slowpitch softball tournament today will raise funds for the Houston Police Department’s K-9 fund.

The event began at 8 a.m. at the ball field at the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce Fairgrounds. Lunch will be served to the public from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Boxed lunches for $5 will include barbecue pulled pork sandwich, chips, cookie and soda.

A silent auction will be held throughout the day and conclude at 3 p.m. Many local businesses have donated items, including Evan’s Sporting Goods, D & L Florist, Janstiques, Neal’s Sporting Goods, Olivia Andrew Photography, The Piney River Brewery, Debo’s Hardware and Untangled.

Houston police are raising $10,000 to purchase the department’s first K-9 dog. The animal will be used for narcotics detection and raising awareness in the school district.
