Volunteers removed 56 tires and 76 bags of trash out of the upper Big Piney River on Saturday.
Organizers said 66 participated in the day that saw lots of trash picked out. Among the items retrieved from the stream were chairs, cattle panels and fencing and cattle supplement feeders. The cleanup broke all previous records for debris.
Stream Team members commented that they are “over-the-hump” removing old tires from the Big Piney River. Aluminum beer cans, which should be recycled, have become the predominant trash item in the river.
Event organizers were the Big Piney River Stream Team Watershed and Missouri Stream Team. They thanked many donors, including the Raftville Canoe Co., Miller’s Grill, Walmart, Town and Country Supermarket, the Piney River Brewery Co., Cabool Tire, Bumper to Bumper, Shetler’s and Orscheln Farm and Home.
