A special election is Tuesday to elect a new congressman.

Voters in the 8th Congressional District will travel today to polling precincts to decide their congressman.

The election was sparked by then-Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson, who resigned shortly after the General Election to take a post with the national association that represents rural cooperatives. Emerson, who served eight terms, left office in January.

Candidates on the ballot are: Rep. Steve Hodges, Democrat; Rep. Jason Smith, Republican; Bill Slantz, Libertarian; and Doug Enyart, Constitution. Each was nominated by their party.

Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

The county clerk’s office will be open Saturday for absentee balloting.
