Kayla S. Cork

An Ava woman charged in the death of her 7-month-old boy is being held at the Texas County Jail.

According to the Wright County Sheriff’s Department, Kayla S. Cork, 20, was arrested June 28 and is charged with second-degree murder and two related felonies.

According to Wright County authorities, deputies were called to Cork’s home last August where they found the child dead, and an investigation revealed that he had been abused.

In addition to the murder charge, Cork faces charges of child abuse resulting in death and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child. Wright County Sheriff Glenn Adler said she is being housed here after being threatened at the Wright County Jail.

“When you get charges for something like that and it’s a grown-up killed, people don’t get near as mad,” Adler said. “But when you kill a little child, even the inmates get upset. She was over here and someone knew about the case, so we had to get her out of there.”

Cork is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.
