The Cabool School District has won a grant to focus on wellness.

The Cabool School District has won an $86,264 grant to provide a healthy environment for kindergarten through eighth grade students.

Cabool was among 13 schools in the state to win the Missouri Foundation for Health funding that is guaranteed for one year with an opportunity for more. There is no local match.

Superintendent Wes Davis said the funds will be used to employ a full-time wellness coordinator, who will work with staff in the elementary and middle schools. It will include school menu analysis, a review of physical activities during the day and possibly activities outside of the classroom. Job duties will be determined.

A committee will form in each building to work with the coordinator.

Davis said the district was contacted because of the county’s poverty level and other local demographics. The “Schools as the Hub” program’s aim is to fight childhood obesity.
