Gov. Jay Nixon announced the Plato School District was one of five applicants approved for a tornado shelter.

A Houston construction firm was awarded a contract to construct a FEMA storm shelter and new high school kitchen on the Cabool School District campus.

Gentry Construction Co. was awarded the storm shelter that will connect to the north side of the high school “B” building. The outlay is about $1.123 million. Of that, FEMA picks up the cost of $816,828.

The $562,500 kitchen includes doors to connect to the storm shelter, a sprinkler system, air conditioning, painting and acoustics. Equipment will not exceed $205,092.

Construction is expected to take about 180 days for the FEMA shelter and 270 days for the non-FEMA portion.
