The Roby Fire Department responded at mid-day Sunday to a report of a motorcycle crash near Highways U and 17. A medical helicopter was called.

The Houston Police Department responded Sunday night to a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 63 in which a Houston man was injured.

Houston Police Chief Jim McNiell said at about 8:20 p.m., a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser being driven by 20-year-old Lainey M. Casper, of Springfield, pulled out of the driveway between Cozumel and Sonic into the path of a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle being driven northbound by Gary W. Fuwell, 30, of Houston.

McNiell said an investigating officer determined Fuwell had laid the bike down in an attempt to avoid crashing, but it impacted the left-front of the car and came to rest lodged in the wheel well. After making hard contact with the pavement, Fuwell reportedly complained of hip pain and was transported by ambulance to Texas County Memorial Hospital.

Casper, who was not injured, was ticketed for failure to yield right-of-way.

“Basically, it was a situation where she thought she had enough time to beat the motorcycle, and unfortunately she didn’t,” McNiell said. “Fortunately, (Fuwell) did a very good job of defensive driving, or it could have been a lot worse.”

The Houston Fire Department was called to the scene.
