The Houston school board adopted a resolution at last week’s monthly meeting supporting Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto of House Bill 253.

The resolution, which in part says the bill “would jeopardize the ability of the state to provide adequate funding for our public schools for years to come,” urges the Missouri General Assembly to sustain the veto. The board passed the resolution with a 6-0 vote.

School boards across the state have adopted similar resolutions stating HB253, which would reduce state revenue by more than $800 million, could have a significant impact on current school funding and potentially reduce the amount of funding for students and districts across the state.

“I don’t care to debate the politics,” Houston Superintendent Scott Dill said during his presentation to the board. “My main problem is we’re being used as a tool in this fight. This resolution very specifically addresses that.”

According to the governor, HB 253 would “take hundreds of millions of dollars away from every school district” in the state.
