Houston coach Brent Kell talks to his team during the 2012-'13 regular season. The Lady Tigers earned a share of the South Central Association championship following a vote Thursday by the conference athletic directors.

The Houston High School girls’ basketball team received a share of the 2012-’13 South Central Association championship following a vote Thursday by the conference’s athletic directors.

HHS AD Brent Kell, who is also the girls’ basketball coach, said the group convened after the Missouri State High School Activities Association ruled Thayer had used an ineligible player during the season. Thayer self-reported the violation to MSHSAA.

Both Houston and Willow Springs finished runners-up to Thayer with 5-2 conference records. The two schools will be co-champions. Thayer was undefeated in SCA play.

“We’re not jumping up and down,” Kell said, “but it was handled correctly.”

Thayer beat HHS 69-54 on Jan. 31. The Lady Tigers also lost 29-28 at Willow Springs in early January.

Houston, which went 11-15 on the court, will receive an additional victory to finish 12-14 and 6-1 in the SCA.
