Pastor Bill Villapiano of Faith Fellowship speaks during last year's "Prayer Zone Challenge" inside HIett Gymnasium. The second annual event is 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11.

An event tonight in Houston will unite Texas County in prayer for area schools.

The second annual “Prayer Zone Challenge” is 7 p.m. Sunday inside the newly air-conditioned Hiett Gymnasium. The event is hosted by the Houston Ministerial Alliance.

More than 600 people attended last year’s event, which focuses on praying for students, faculty, support staff, administration and board members in all Texas County schools. This year’s version will include worship led by Dave and Darlene Gourley as well as the Undivided Hearts praise team. Dr. Cordie Wimberley of Souls Harbor Family Worship will deliver the message.

The Houston Ministerial Alliance erected a sign last year near the southern city limits marking the community as a “prayer zone.” The group also passed out yard signs.

“In each community, school zones and crossings are clearly marked with signs to alert drivers to exercise caution because of the presence of children and students,” said Pastor Bill Villapiano of Faith Fellowship. “These same school zone signs can also serve as a reminder for all of us to pray for our schools as we pass through them.”

More yard signs will be available at this year’s event. Donations will be accepted to help cover the costs.
