A day to promote library card sign-up is planned at the Summersville branch of the Texas County Library.

The Summersville branch of the Texas County Library held a grand opening Saturday to celebrate a new facility that more than doubles the space and opens new opportunities for residents of southeast Texas County.

The building — on the south side of the Summersville square — was showcased among food, balloons and other treats for children and patrons.

Earlier, a $241,610 grant was received through the Community Development Block Grant program by the Texas County Library Foundation. The Texas County Library system contributed $63,000 of cash and in-kind services toward the project. The building was owned by the Roger Kirkman family, whose donation of a portion of the purchase price made the project possible. Audrey Barnhart is the library director of the county-wide system. Kathie Cox is the local librarian.

More books, the latest in computers (jumping from five to 14) and display areas are featured at the new location. The library acquired shelving from the Springfield inventory of Borders for cents on the dollar. Custom furniture — in the children’s area and other locations — also matches the bookshelves.

A brigade formed Aug. 3 to move books from the west side of the square to the new location.
